Hostels:

  • Hostel Suites Palermo –    Great hostel, touchy shower, clean, friendly and sociable.
  • Milhouse Avenue – Great hostel, great shower, clean, friendly, new and sociable.

Places to go:

  • Palermo – Soho like district with arts and markets.
  • Palermo Hollywood – great area with nice restuarants.
  • Plaza Cortazar – several blocks around and all the way down J.L Borges for markets and shopping.
  • Recoleta – upmarket district with markets, cemetry (where eva was buried), big flower.
  • San Telmo – markets on the weekend down Defensa from Plaza De Mayo. Wear comfortable shoes since it is on cobblestone for the entire length.
  • Florida street – normal shops and markets throughout the week.
  • La Boca – colourful buildings for a few blocks. Dangerous beyond the tourist area.
  • Tigre – day trip out of town on the train. It is an area with deltas and to travel between the islands is by the ferrys. Either private, which you can’t get off or public so you can get off and walk around.

Notes:

  • Taxi’s are cheap. A trip of about 20 blocks or so might be 20 argentinian pesos. This is about 5 australian dollars.
  • Trains/Metro are cheap too and quick. 1.70 pesos for a single ticket to get anywhere.
  • Tango shows are abundant – I went to one at La Ventana with an awesomely done steak.
  • Empanadas are the snack of choice. They are about 3.50 Pesos for a half pie sized delight. They come with all different fillings.
